As a new graduate nurse, stepping into the clinical environment can be both exciting and overwhelming. Having the right equipment and supplies is crucial for providing high-quality patient care and ensuring your own efficiency and comfort. Here’s a list of essential items every new graduate nurse should consider having:
1. Basic Nursing Supplies
Stethoscope: A high-quality stethoscope is essential for assessing patients' heart and lung sounds.
Pocket Organizer: A compact organizer to keep essential tools and notes handy.
Clipboard or other book for report and notes: Throughout my years on the floor, I've had two such items. One was a conveniently sized folding clipboard with quick reference information printed on it (Check it out here: https://amzn.to/4eiVkla). However, I eventually replaced it with something I ended up liking a lot better. Made by a small business owner on Etsy, I fell in love with her reusable 8-patient report book. It comes with a special marker that doesn't wipe off accidentally in your pocket, but does come off easily with Oxivir wipes or alcohol swabs. I love this item for its design, creativity, and usefulness, and even convinced a coworker to get one with me.
Hand Sanitizer: An essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing infection.
Bandage Scissors: Useful for cutting dressings and tapes. If you buy the pocket organizer I posted above, this is already included!
Penlight: Useful for neuro assessments especially! Some even have a size guide for pupil assessments. This is also included in the pocket organizer shared above!
Badge reel with light: I have used this exact one for years and I love it. It is especially useful for night shift. The light is rechargable, bright, and guided down so you can see the work surface before you. Not to mention it is great quality and lasts a very long time! I've had mine for years.
2. Comfort Items
Comfortable Shoes: Invest in good-quality, supportive shoes to withstand long shifts. Especially look for washable ones... Trust me, you'll need to wash your shoes at some point.
Scrubs: Comfortable and durable scrubs that meet your workplace requirements.
Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important during long shifts.
3. Educational Resources
Clinical Handbook: A pocket-sized clinical reference guide can be invaluable.
Drug Reference Book: Make sure you get an updated version each year!
Badge Cards: Consider this set of quick reference cards for your badge!
Conclusion
Equipping yourself with these essential tools and supplies will help you navigate your new role as a nurse with confidence and competence. Remember that every workplace may have specific requirements, so it’s a good idea to check with your employer for any additional items you may need. Embrace this exciting journey, and best of luck in your nursing career!
